About

The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation (NYSE: BK) — commonly known as BNY Mellon or BNY — is the world’s largest custodian bank and securities services company, headquartered at 240 Greenwich Street, New York, New York 10286 — in the Tribeca neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, in a BNY-owned 25-story modernist office tower designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, originally completed in 1985. BNY Mellon moved its corporate headquarters to 240 Greenwich Street — previously addressed as 101 Barclay Street — in July 2018, consolidating approximately 4,300 Lower Manhattan employees into a single hub.

BNY Mellon was formed in July 2007 through the merger of The Bank of New York (founded 1784 by Alexander Hamilton — making it the oldest bank in the United States) and Mellon Financial Corporation (founded 1869 in Pittsburgh by the Mellon family). The combined entity is a systemically important financial institution (SIFI) and a global leader in investment management, investment services, and wealth management — serving central banks, sovereign wealth funds, corporations, institutional investors, and individuals in more than 100 markets worldwide.

BNY’s custodian bank franchise is its most defining characteristic: with $52.1 trillion+ in assets under custody and administration (as of 2023), BNY effectively serves as the world’s financial infrastructure backbone — holding, safeguarding, and servicing a significant fraction of global investable assets. The company also manages $2 trillion+ in assets under management through its investment management subsidiary, Mellon Investments Corporation. CEO Robin Vince has led BNY since 2022.

About 240 Greenwich Street: BNY’s 240 Greenwich Street headquarters is a 25-story, 325-foot modernist office tower designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 1985 as the operations center for Irving Trust. The building is clad in grey metal and silver reflective glass curtain wall — it rises 19 floors on its east side, stair-stepping up to 25 floors on the west side, with a distinctive rounded southeast corner at Barclay and Greenwich Streets. BNY Mellon has owned the building for over 30 years, originally through a 99-year ground lease and later purchasing it from New York City for $352 million in 2018. The building sustained significant damage during the September 11, 2001 attacks — most of its southern facade windows were shattered by debris from the collapse of 7 World Trade Center across the street, and the building was closed from September 11, 2001 to July 12, 2002 for repairs. The Tribeca location places BNY’s headquarters in Lower Manhattan’s most prestigious financial and residential corridor, blocks from the New York Stock Exchange, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and One World Trade Center.
