About

McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD) is the world’s largest fast food restaurant chain, headquartered at 110 North Carpenter Street, Chicago, Illinois 60607 — a purpose-built, nine-story, 580,000-square-foot global headquarters in Chicago’s vibrant West Loop neighborhood, constructed on the former site of Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios and opened on June 4, 2018. McDonald’s was founded on April 15, 1955 by Ray Kroc in Des Plaines, Illinois — though the original McDonald’s restaurant was opened in 1940 by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California, whose system-driven operations Kroc franchised and eventually purchased outright in 1961. McDonald’s was first headquartered in Chicago’s downtown Loop before moving to Oak Brook, Illinois in 1971, where it operated for 47 years from “McDonald’s Plaza” before relocating to its current West Loop campus. The 2016 decision to move back to Chicago proper was driven by the company’s desire to attract younger technology and marketing talent who preferred urban environments over suburban campuses. McDonald’s operates more than 40,000 restaurant locations in over 100 countries, serving approximately 69 million customers daily — making it the most visited restaurant brand on earth. Approximately 95% of McDonald’s restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees, with McDonald’s Corporation earning revenue primarily through rent, royalties, and fees from franchisees, plus sales from the roughly 5% of company-owned locations. The new Chicago HQ is a build-to-suit collaboration between developer Sterling Bay and architect Gensler, features neighborhood retail along Randolph Street, public gathering spaces, indoor parking, and houses Hamburger University — McDonald’s global training facility — within the building.

About the West Loop HQ campus: McDonald’s 110 North Carpenter Street headquarters is a landmark nine-story, 580,000-square-foot build-to-suit development designed by global architecture firm Gensler and developed by Sterling Bay — completed in June 2018 on the former site of Harpo Studios, the production home of The Oprah Winfrey Show for 25 years. The building features ground-floor neighborhood retail along Randolph Street, extensive public outdoor spaces, indoor parking, and — uniquely — houses Hamburger University, McDonald’s flagship global management and leadership training institute, on-site, making the Chicago HQ a live training campus as well as a corporate office. The West Loop location places McDonald’s at the heart of Chicago’s most dynamic business and restaurant neighborhood, immediately adjacent to Fulton Market — Chicago’s top culinary and tech hub — and two blocks from Google’s Midwest headquarters, giving McDonald’s direct access to the city’s deep talent pool in technology, marketing, and food innovation.

How to Escalate a Complaint

  1. Speak with the restaurant manager on duty — For in-store food quality, incorrect orders, or service issues, the restaurant manager can issue refunds and replacements on the spot. This is always the fastest resolution path.
  2. Call 1-800-244-6227 — For complaints not resolved in-store — app order disputes, MyMcDonald’s Rewards issues, and food safety concerns. Document the rep name and reference number.
  3. Note: franchise vs. corporate ownership matters — Approximately 95% of McDonald’s locations are independently owned by franchisees. The corporate customer service line handles all location complaints, but resolution authority for franchised restaurants ultimately lies with the franchisee-owner.
  4. Mail to the Chicago HQ — Write to McDonald’s Corporation, Customer Relations, 110 N Carpenter Street, Chicago, IL 60607. Include the restaurant address, date of visit, prior contact history, and resolution requested.
  5. Report food safety to your local health department — Your county health department has direct restaurant inspection authority and can conduct an unannounced inspection. This is often the most effective escalation for food safety failures.
  6. File with the FDA — For serious food safety incidents, report at reportaproblem.food.gov.
  7. File with the BBB — McDonald’s is listed with the BBB. File at bbb.org.
  8. File with the Illinois AG — The Illinois AG’s consumer protection division is at illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/consumers. McDonald’s Chicago HQ makes the Illinois AG a directly relevant authority.
