About

New York Life Insurance Company is the largest mutual life insurance company in the United States, headquartered at 51 Madison Avenue — a 34-story Cass Gilbert-designed landmark occupying an entire Manhattan city block between Madison and Park Avenue South, 26th and 27th Streets. The company moved into this “Home Office” in 1929 and has occupied it continuously since. Founded April 12, 1845, New York Life has operated as a mutual company — owned by policyholders, not outside shareholders — for 180 years.

Craig DeSanto serves as Chair, President and CEO, having become CEO-elect in November 2021 and Chair in January 2023. FY2025 delivered record earnings of $3.6 billion (up 4% YoY), surplus grew to $34.7 billion, and New York Life declared a record $2.78 billion dividend to policy owners for 2026 — the 172nd consecutive annual dividend and the largest in the company’s 180-year history. AUM reached $879 billion, insurance sales grew 14%, annuity sales grew 40%, and policy owners collectively hold nearly $1.3 trillion in individual life insurance coverage.

How to Escalate a Complaint

  1. Call 1-800-225-5695 and ask for a Claims Supervisor or senior specialist. Document every representative name and case number. Follow up every call with a certified letter summarizing what was discussed.
  2. Send certified letter to HQ. Write to New York Life Insurance Company, Attn: Claims Resolution, 51 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10010 — include policy number, all case numbers, all documentation, and the specific resolution requested.
  3. File with the NYDFS at dfs.ny.gov/complaint or call 1-800-342-3736 (free) — the NYDFS is New York Life’s primary regulator and has direct enforcement authority over claims handling. The NYDFS External Appeals Unit handles denied claims.
  4. File with your state’s insurance department (non-NY residents) — New York Life is licensed in all 50 states; find your state regulator at naic.org.
  5. File through NAIC at naic.org/consumer_complaints.htm — complaints are forwarded to your state regulator.
  6. File with the NY AG for investment and annuity fraud, misrepresentation, and unsuitable product sales at ag.ny.gov or 1-800-771-7755.
  7. For ERISA group benefit claim denials, contact the U.S. Department of Labor’s EBSA at dol.gov/agencies/ebsa or 1-866-444-3272. ERISA requires an internal appeal before federal court action — consult an ERISA attorney.
  8. Consult a life insurance attorney. For denied death benefits and large annuity disputes, attorneys often work on contingency. The Center for Life Insurance Disputes at cflid.com also provides advocacy services.
