Spirit Airlines is an American ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) headquartered at Spirit Central — 1731 Radiant Drive, Dania Beach, Florida 33004 — in Broward County near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which serves as Spirit’s primary operational hub. Spirit pioneered the unbundled “à la carte” airfare model in American aviation, separating the base ticket price from add-on fees for baggage, seat selection, beverages, and snacks — a model that has been adopted in varying degrees by competitors across the industry. Founded in 1983 in Eastpointe, Michigan as Charter One Airlines, the company rebranded as Spirit Airlines in 1992 and transitioned from charter to scheduled service. The airline relocated its headquarters to Miramar, Florida in 1999 at 2800 Executive Way, Miramar Park of Commerce — where it expanded to 97,106 square feet by 2018. By August 2025, the airline issued a going concern warning and filed a second Chapter 11 case on August 29, 2025 — making Spirit a rare “Chapter 22” (second bankruptcy within a short period) — with a more comprehensive operational restructuring that includes cutting fleet to 76–80 aircraft and a 25%+ year-over-year capacity reduction.

About Spirit Central (Dania Beach campus)
Spirit Central opened officially in April 2024 at the Dania Pointe mixed-use development in Dania Beach, Broward County — approximately 3 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The campus spans more than 11 acres and was constructed by Brasfield & Gorrie. It comprises four distinct buildings: (1) a 180,000-square-foot, six-floor corporate support center housing 1,000+ team members across Operations Control Center, IT, Flight Operations, and Inflight divisions; (2) an amenity building with food and wellness facilities; (3) a crew training facility featuring hands-on flight simulators for pilot and crew certification; and (4) a corporate housing facility for crew members on assignment. The campus was designed to consolidate Spirit’s dispersed Miramar operations and the airline’s growing training and crew infrastructure under one campus near its main hub. Spirit opened Spirit Central just six months before filing its first Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2024.

Dave Davis — Interim CEO (Second Restructuring)
Davis was installed as interim CEO following the second Chapter 11 filing in August 2025, tasked with leading Spirit’s operational and financial restructuring in the second case. Ted Christie — Former President & CEO (departed April 2025)
Christie served as Spirit’s President and CEO through its first Chapter 11 filing and emergence in March 2025. He resigned in April 2025, approximately one month after Spirit emerged from its first bankruptcy.
