About
Harbor Freight Tools is America’s largest privately held tool and equipment retailer, headquartered at 26677 Agoura Road, Calabasas, California 91302 — a 228,990-square-foot, four-building corporate campus at Corporate Center Calabasas on Agoura Road, which Harbor Freight moved into in 2019 under a 15-year lease. The company was founded in 1977 by Allan Smidt and his son Eric Smidt in North Hollywood, California — originally as Harbor Freight Salvage, a mail-order business selling surplus and salvage tools by catalog. Eric Smidt became CEO in 1999 and remains Chairman and CEO today, making Harbor Freight one of the largest privately owned, family-operated retail chains in the United States. Harbor Freight’s business model is built on cutting out middlemen by sourcing directly from the same factories that supply major competitors, then passing savings to customers — offering 7,000+ tools and accessories at prices typically 20–50% below comparable branded items. The company grew from a catalog business to a single retail store in 1980s Moreno Valley, California, and accelerated national expansion through the 1990s and 2000s, crossing 1,000 stores in 2017, 1,400 stores in 2023, and approximately 1,550 stores across 48 states by 2025 — opening several new locations every week. Estimated FY2024–2025 annual revenue reached $8.7 billion, capturing significant share of the $60 billion US tools market. Harbor Freight is entirely private and has no plans for a public offering, with no external shareholders, no private equity backing, and full ownership retained by the Smidt family.

Executive Leadership
Eric Smidt — Chairman & CEO
Eric Smidt co-founded Harbor Freight with his father Allan Smidt in 1977 at age 17, working at the company from its earliest days as a mail-order salvage tool business. He became President in the early 1990s and CEO in 1999, and has led the company’s transformation from a regional catalog business into America’s largest tool retailer — growing it to 1,550+ stores and approximately $8.7 billion in revenue while keeping it entirely private and family-owned.
