Stater Bros. Markets is the largest privately owned supermarket chain in Southern California, headquartered at 301 S. Tippecanoe Avenue, San Bernardino, California 92408 — a 2.3 million square foot corporate office and distribution center campus on 200 acres, consolidated under one roof since 2008. Founded on August 17, 1936 in Yucaipa, California, by twin brothers Cleo and Leo Stater with a $600 down payment on a small grocery store, Stater Bros. has grown entirely through organic expansion to 171 stores across seven Southern California counties — Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Kern, and Imperial.
In a major leadership transition effective September 29, 2025, Greg McNiff — a 44-year grocery veteran and Stater Bros. President and COO since 2019 — was elevated to CEO and President. Longtime CEO and Chairman Pete Van Helden (who had led Stater Bros. since 2016) transitioned to Executive Chairman of the Board and continues as CEO of Stater Bros. Charities, the company’s nonprofit arm. Prior to joining Stater Bros., McNiff held senior roles at Albertsons including VP of Operations, VP of Integration, VP of Marketing, and VP of Merchandising.
